Jack's History

Our personal histories help to mould us into the people we are today. What events took place in Jack's past to make him the man he is in BTiLC? Here's a few ideas I came up with:

Jack grew up in the sixties, but instead of embracing the counter-culture of the time he rejected it and found solace in working on his father's car. He helped to rebuild the engine which caught fire upon starting it after the overhaul. Jack's father had to buy a new car.

At school Jack was a mediocre student. He did okay, but he didn't take his education seriously. Instead he focus on athletics and was part of a championship team in high school. As equipment manager.

A true patriot from the very beginning Jack immediately enlisted in the Army after graduating. Jack squeaked through basic training and was stationed in Greenland as a cooks helper. He was given a discharge after a diarrhoea epidemic that incapacitated the entire base. Jack was unaffected.

After his discharge Jack took a number of jobs, each of which didn't suit his temperament, until he happened upon an add for long-haul trucking...

What else do you see shaping Jack?

Nice. Fun ideas to play with. Jack always struck me as the former HS football player. Athletic enough to be a star in High School, but not enough to go on to college. He doesn't seem very disciplined, which makes me shy away from a military idea. But he likes to wander. I could see him following his favorite rock band on tour for a year or two.

Interesting ideas.

I didn't think of him as a player because of some of his clumsy actions. I see him in the army (as a cook) because although he's not one for authority, he is a super patriot and there was a war on when he graduated.

One thing I didn't consider though is that he certainly has a talent with the ladies. Perhaps he was a football player, but not a starter.

Interesting thread. :)

Not sure if Jack would have been in the military- the thing that makes me doubt is his forgetting to flick off the safety of the TEC-9. Prior to the movie, he doesn't seem to be proficient with guns.

He may have wanted to be an actor earlier in his life, or did some theatre work in high school- see how smoothly he pulled off his "Henry Swanson" character?

Excellent point about the theatre work. He did portray Henry Swanson with an easy flair didn't he?

Yes, he did! :)

You could tell Kurt Russell was having fun doing that, too- it's always a treat (at least, for me) when a character in a movie pretends to be another character. Clint Eastwood did something similar in Pink Cadillac, too.

I think this is probably done most often when men are dressed as women.

As for Jack's theatre past, while he's obviously good enough to distract people, I'm not sure he'd ever win any awards for acting. He seems like he takes it all as a bit of fun. Maybe there was a girl in high school that he liked that was into drama so he signed up.

I like that- also, I think the name "Henry Swanson" came from some guy he went to school with, and he was probably a big nerd, who eventually ended up owning some large successful company. Jack used his name a little out of spite, I think. :)

I could definitely see that. Henry Swanson would be extremely shocked to have the SFPD roll up to his million dollar home and be asked questions in front of his supermodel wife why he was at a brothel in Chinatown in SF.

Perfect revenge for not helping Jack with his homework.

I couldn't stop laughing at that visualization. :)
