I think it's still iffy. Last I heard no script or anything, just the idea being floated around. Plus the Rock pulled back a little after the fan backlash. Until they get John Carpenter to sign on to direct, I don't think it will pick up traction.

The Chinese have a lot of hells. There should be a special hell for anyone involved in a reboot of BTiLC. :)

Exactly. But I'd still be fine with a "sequel". If the Rock wanted to play Jack Burton Jr, and they made a similar film, I would be okay with that. That way even if it sucks we can always just ignore it as a bad sequel.

A direct sequel would be acceptable, but Dwayne Johnson? WTF? Sorry. I can't see him pulling it off with the same straight faced charm and wit Kurt did.

There's only one Kurt Russel. But if the Rock is playing his son, he doesn't need to be the same. As opposed to a remake where he needs to nail Jack Burton.

There's the rub. In any sequel we'll invariably end up comparing the 'hero' to Kurt. There's no way to live up to that.

Any sequel would have to be exceptionally well written in order for us to keep from making this sort of comparison. Maybe instead of making the principal character a relation of Jack's they should be a relation of Wang's, or Gracie's, or Egg's and is now in possession of The Pork Chop Express.

Yeah, there are a ton of ways to go. But I feel like a sequel gives way more wiggle room on plot and characters. No matter what they do, I'm just hoping we get a well written script. Also, if it's the Rock, I hope his tag line is "It's all in the muscles" and we get to laugh at his absurd size the entire movie. He definitely wouldn't be the same as Jack since he's as big as a linebacker.

A well written script is the key I think. Any 'reboot' or 're-imagining' of BTiLC is just code for, 'I don't know what the hell I'm doing and so I'll just mess with the original script until the studio says enough.'

While I'm thinking of it, while Jack Burton is the heart of BTiLC, the rest of the cast was just as stellar. How do you replace a character like Egg Shen, or Wang Chi, or Gracie Law? I can't think of too many actors today that might even come close to filling those shoes.

I feel like a lot of times you can find some great "unknown" character actors for roles like Egg and Wang. I think one of the big mistakes Hollywood always makes is trying to fill every role with some big star. There are a lot of talented people out there who would do the role justice. No reason to try and cast some known name.

Absolutely. Unfortunately Hollywood thinks that big name equals big money. I would rather a cast of perfectly cast unknowns than an ego-fest of big names trying to outdo one another.

That isn't to say a name actor couldn't play a good part, it's just that the casting has to reflect the story rather than the story reflect the casting.
