|
|
Hi guys,
After failing to reach a good deal with my webhosting service at startlogic, I have decided to change hosting providers and will be moving the entire site over to Fatcow in the next few days.
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out a way to export this phpBB over to the new site, but it looks like I need to upgrade it to phpBB3 first...
Anyone who would be willing to assist with this endeavor would be greatly appreciated, otherwise the new site's Forums will be as empty as the Hell of Honest Politicians.
Thanks
-Josh

I am a computer retard Josh, I have no idea what needs to be done to help switch things over.
Is this something that anyone can help with or are you specifically looking for people who understand PHP in some way? |

Heh, I guess anyone who's done this sort of thing before or is comfortable with mySQL servers and backend stuff.

Was that tech talk for "it's all in the reflexes?"
Sorry Josh, would love to help but I don't know anything about this stuff. |

The move is complete! I was able to successfully move the forum, though I'm still not done trying to get the board to phpBB3 and purge literally hundreds of thousands of SPAM accounts.
More soon... |

Congrats on the move. You were so smooth, I didn't even realize anything changed.
And did you say hundreds of thousands of spam accounts??
Wow. That's nuts. |

Hey Josh, again, I don't know tech stuff. But could you just delete every user who hasn't posted? Would that make your life easier?
By my count there are only 319 of us with actual posts on the site. That would severely reduce the numbers you have to work with.
Just a thought. If it's no help, feel free to ignore me. |

I wish there was a "delete every non-posting member" button!
As far as I can see, every member must be dealt with individually- and since spammers sign up a dozen a day or more, even taking out ten a day is going to be pointless.
(That doesn't mean there isn't a magic button- it may just be we haven't found it yet.) |

Could you shut down new members for now? Seems like we don't get many legit members around here very often.
Or heck, maybe purge us all and we can just re sign up. That might seem harsh but if it makes your lives easier. |

So even if they were all cleared out, they'd be back to thousands in a year? Wow. I wonder why this board is so popular with the spammers. |

It's a purely automated thing. This phpBB doesn't have as much filtering security as most modern phpBBs.
When I finally have a free moment (been busy crazy these last few weeks) I'm going to try to update to phpBB3 and purge ALL accounts that haven't posted a message in the last 3 months.
