would you most like to be and why? (cos we all know BTiLC is real right)

i.e. which is the coolest. on personal preference, not on how many lines in the film they get!

(any UK guys- "storms in their eyes" - tonight matthew, I'm going to be... Thunder!)

i'm a girl ..but so what..i'd wanna be lightning anyway...he's more mysterious to me because we see more of the other two than him...and just because being able to create lightning all around you at anytime..that would hurt anything else is pretty awesome.

Thunder is definately coolest, but being able to explode isn't as cool as being able to shoot lightning....so, I am going to go with lightning.

...then, there is always Rain's unique talent with a nerf ball. So, if I were Rain, I'd probably do various tricks with my nerf ball, and I'd also shout "YOU ARE NOWHERE!" at random people on the streets just for fun.

All three are cool but lightning is the coolest because he can fly and do that cool zappy thing. He has that whole other worldly vibe going on.

Rain for me, because he's a classic wuxia flying swordsman. Wuxia flying swordsmen are always cool.

movie "kung fu" is always wushu, which means "martial art" but is really more gymnastics and stage fighting than anything else. real kung fu is much closer to kick boxing, but with throwing........and soft tissuse splitting........ and bone breaking and dislocating, muscle rending, vital area striking (eyes) and other assorted mayhem, carnage and pain. Very Happy

"Wuxia" (pr. wooshya) is a term for a genre of Chinese film; very roughly translated it means "martial heroes." It encompasses films like Crouching Tiger, Hero, Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time in China, Bride with White Hair, etc. Some people refer to these as "wire fu" movies.

Wuxia characters are basically the Chinese version of superheroes. The cultural difference here intrigues me. On the one hand, you have western superheroes, who get their powers either by accident (oh no I was bitten by a radioactive eggplant) or by birthright (oh no I have the genetic ability to completely control the weather, feel sorry for me). On the other hand, eastern superheroes get their powers by mastering their chi via a lifetime of hard training. You have to wonder what that says about our different societal values.

When Crouching Tiger came out these two friends of mine starting saying they hated it, it was silly. I asked them what was silly about it, and they said they hated the part where the people walked on water. I asked them if they liked X-Men, and they were like, yeah, it was awesome. I replied that someone walked on water in that movie, and they were like, yeah, but it's OK, they were mutants.

This might tell us something about why BTLC has never risen above cult status.

Mike

P.S. Trivia time: George Lucas was a wuxia fan in his youth. He took the genre's concept of chi, renamed it The Force, and sold it to the west three decades ago...and most people have never been the wiser!

thanks for the info mike, good explanation. I thought it sounded like the crouching tiger martial art they use (in the story), I'm sure it sounded something like that Confused
