true, I see where you're coming from. But I also see how he was involved in treatment for a specific cure to his problem, so you could say that even though it would help many others, it still had selfish underlyings (if thats a word).

Yeah, I read the Christopher Reeve thing awhile back. He does make an interesting point -- one that I've often thought about. Advocating for cures to diseases that specifically affect them, even if prior to that they didn't give a crap, is indeed selfish ... but I don't see anything wrong with that. Of course, when things hit home, they are more salient to us, and we tend to focus our attention on those things. So..while selfish, the attention a celebrity brings to something like that has the potential to help alot of people.

The only thing I don't like, is when people try to imply how wonderful, morally superior, and selfless these people are for going out of their way to be advocates for cures to diseases that specifically afflict them.

But what I'm trying to say is: He could have just pissed and moaned about his poor self, instead he tried to help others, though maybe selfish. Did make a difference like my bro Lo said....

One thing to remember about Maddox: he is a satirist, and satirists frequently use inflammatory language that overstates their own emotions about a topic. While I imagine there's a grain of real feeling in everything Maddox writes, not everything he says should be taken purely at face value.
