It might be more to the point to do a poll of people's second favorite JC film. My second would be Prince of Darkness, followed closely by Escape from New York. The Thing is of course awesome, and I have a soft spot for In the Mouth of Madness.

The poll didn't list his best movie (after Big Trouble): Prince of Darkness

My personal favourite has to be The Thing after BTILC, followed by Escape From New York.

BTLC is by FAR his most visionary, best flick. But If I had to choose a second, it would be "They Live" by a long shot.

Are you kidding?
"I have come to chew bubble gum and to kick exquisitely varnished Oak-wood storage cabinet, and I'm all out of bubble gum."

One of the best quotes of all time.

I agree -- They Live is definately second best. I loved that line -- They even had Duke say it in the first map of the third episode in Duke Nukem....lol!

I am sorry to say this but I find JC very much a hit or miss kind a guy, he has in his time given us some awesome movies but I think it would be fair to say that for every great film he does there is also a turkey, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS for gods sake I cannot believe this was done by the same guy who gave us Halloween for example!

Hey but then again I prefer Halloween III to the original so what do I know!

I just voted for 'They Live' and I noticed I was the only one. If we're being honest here BTILC is always going to win this. I mean it's a BTILC fan site so it's always going to be voted as Carpenter's best movie by the folks on here.

They Live had some great lines:

"gonna be hell to pay"

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick exquisitely varnished Oak-wood storage cabinet... and I'm all out of bubblegum."

"You see, I take these glasses off, she looks like a regular person, doesn't she? Put 'em back on... formaldehyde-face!"

"You... you look like your face fell in the cheese dip back in 1957."

Classics stuff.

And the scene where they beat the hell out of each other for 8 minutes is legendary.
